The Purpose

Ever heard the word "upcycle"? You know, like "recycle", except with an 'up' instead of 're'? Well, until approximately two months ago, I hadn't either. But, when I did, oh-what a revolution. The light dawned. I had a purpose. Life suddenly made sense. What joy!

Well...not really; none of that actually happened, but it sure sounds good, right? In reality, I already have a purpose, the light bulbs were still 60 watts, and I'm not sure that life ever makes a whole lot of sense. Basically, all of that was to say that:
upcycling. is. awesome.

For those of you who don't know what it is, let me explain. You won't find a definition if you go to dictionary.com (Actually, they'll ask you if you meant 'epicycle'. No, no, I did not mean epicycle, thank you very much.) Basically, it's a combination between recycle and upscale. It's taking something old and used and making it into something new. Something better. Something sweet. Reusing things and repurposing them. And, it's the epitome of being green. It makes recycling look outmoded, passe´and just plane old-fashioned. As some would say, upcycling is the new cool.

You can upcycle anything. Furniture, tools, books, clothing, dishes and so forth. Whatever strikes your fancy. Personally, it's clothes that do it for me. There's so much potential in them. Fabric is moldable- I can cut it, sew it, dye it and stretch it. The color palette is endless. And, it's available. In today's world, people shop all of the time, fulfilling the American dream for the latest and best. And where do their old things go, you ask? Good question. Thrift shops, Goodwill, garage sales or even your neighborhood dumpster. My goal is to rescue these things and see what I can make of them. Some will be utter failures and I can laugh about them. But, my secret, dark hope is that some will be utter successes.

So, really, this is just another blog. Just another girl. Just another idea. Whether or not it's a good one is yet to be determined. Either way, I'm goin' for it.

  1. Sounds good. But if this is the material...I probably won't read it. :) Just sayin'.

Aren't you glad I was your first comment ever?

    Love you.

  3. Archie, I'm glad. And, you're right- this will probably be more like a 'girls only' kind of blog. ;)
